Taking part in this event includes taking on risks. However with proper preparation and care these risks can be minimised so that you have a fun and safe event experience.

 

WHITIANGA MARATHON 2021 PARTICIPATION RULES

 

  1. I acknowledge that I have legal authority to act on behalf of myself, or if the participant is a minor that I have the legal authority to act for the minor on his/her behalf, and that the child is under 18 years of age. I understand and agree that these rules, together with any other terms and conditions I am referred to in relation to this event, are binding on me and any person participating in the event who is under the age of 18 and of who I am a legal guardian, and the participant’s family members, heirs, executors and estate.
  2. I have read and understand the information regarding this event and understand that I participate in this event at my own risk.
  3. I acknowledge and accept that taking part in this event carries an inherent risk of injury, illness and in extreme cases, death.
  4. I acknowledge that by taking part in this event I may be exposed to the following hazards: Bridges, Barriers, Board walks, Cliffs/ banks, Dehydration, Fatigue, Flooding, Ferry crossing, Getting lost, Heat stroke / Hyperthermia, Hyponatremia, Low light conditions, People – Other trail users, spectators, Poor fitness, Renal shutdown, Steep slopes, Steps, Vegetation spikes, prickles, sharp leaf edges, Vehicles/ public roads.
  5. I will be drug and alcohol free for this event.
  6. I acknowledge that although the event has medical personnel and resources at various points along the course, the inaccessibility of some of the trail will make it difficult or impossible for medical assistance to reach me immediately and extractions may take a period of time.
  7. I agree to allow event medical staff to treat me as they see fit.
  8. I hereby attest and verify that I am physically fit and have sufficiently trained for this event.
  9. I agree to comply with the rules and directions of event officials and their personnel.
  10. I will stay on the marked course at all times, unless instructed by event staff.
  11. I will not go out on the course before the race starts or after the race ends.
  12. I will obey all course marking. (Directional orange arrows will direct you on the courses. Wrong Way signs or tape across the track indicate the wrong way. Keep out tape means keep out of the area).
  13. I will stay left at all times. (The course is NOT closed to other vehicles).
  14. My Support crews will not go onto the event course, except where designated by Event Management
  15. I will wear the correct safety gear when taking part as advised by the event officials.
  16. My running shoes must be checked, cleaned and dried before taking part in this event.
  17. My support crew and I will obey the instructions given by event staff
  18. I accept that I may be pulled from the course at any time with the discretion of event staff primarily for, but not limited to, safety reasons.
  19. I will complete the entire course under my own power.
  20. I will not light any fires.
  21. I will be respectful of other venue users such as recreational walkers and mountain bikers.
  22. I will not litter.
  23. I understand that smoking is not permitted at the event or one the course.
  24. I understand that dogs are not allowed on the course
  25. If I wish to withdraw from the event, I will either inform the nearest event staff, or text the Race Communications Manager (021 081 98418).
  26. (Participants who leave the course/event without informing staff of their race number will be classified as “missing”. The participant will be contacted on their mobile phone and their emergency contact will be called. If there is no response from either party or the emergency contact does not know the status of the participant, a search will be activated. Any search related costs will be charged to the participant).
  27. If I need assistance, I will ask a staff member or call the Race Communications Manager (021 081 98418). If none of these options work and I have cell phone coverage and it is a true emergency, I will call NZ emergency services by dialling 111.
  28. I agree that Race management reserves the right to drug test any participant competing in this event – from the time of registration to after the completion of the event.
  29. I hereby allow the use of my name and image to be used in the media and for marketing purposes.
  30. I hereby allowing aerial filming of myself, including use of drones, as part of this event.
  31. To the maximum extent permitted by law, I release and indemnify all persons, corporations, associations and bodies (together with their servants, agents, representatives, officers and employees) involved or otherwise engaged in promoting, sponsoring or staging the event (“Released Parties”) against any loss, injury, damage or liability of any kind whatsoever (including consequential loss) suffered or incurred by you whether or not such loss, injury damage or liability is attributed to the act(s) or omission(s) of any one or more of the Released Parties. If the participant is a minor, I agree that I waive and release in advance any claim or cause of action against any one or more of the Released Parties that would accrue to the minor participant for personal injury, including death, and property damage resulting from the minor’s participation in the event.
  32. I also understand that my contact details will be added to the events database, and that I will receive emails directly from Element Events. I understand that I can unsubscribe from this database at any time. The event organisers will take all reasonable steps to protect the private information of individuals and will not willingly disseminate that information to any third parties without the prior consent of the individual concerned.
  33. I acknowledge that the course may need to be altered at any time (normally due to weather conditions) and I agree to accept all course changes including courses of lesser distance than what is advertised.
  34. By participating in this event I am confirming that I have read and agree to the terms and conditions contained in this link and will continue to be bound by such terms as updated from time to time.

  • Vehicles/ public roads / competitors/ spectators hit by traffic

 

Emergency plans

 

During the event, an emergency could take place such as a fire, Tsunami, earthquake or similar.

If an emergency does occur, follow all instructions from staff who may hold you at certain locations or lead you to safety.

What to do if you are injured / ill or just cannot continue to run/walk:

  1. Stay calm.
  2. Contact one of the two phone numbers on your race bib. Or;
  3. Stop the next runner going past you and ask for help.
  4. Apply first aid to yourself if required.
  5. Put on warm clothing if you are cold.
  6. Wait for assistance. We have event staff and medics who will get to you as soon as they can.

 

What to do if you are lost.

  1. Stop.
  2. Think, can you retrace your steps to the last known track marker? If yes then do so.
  3. If you cannot retrace your steps then stay where you are.
  4. Contact one of the two phone numbers on your race bib. Or;
  5. Put on warm clothing if you are cold.
  6. Wait for assistance. We have event staff and medics who will get to you as soon as they can.
